If you suspect a toilet is clogged don’t flush the toilet until you have tested the drain by removing the tank cover and lifting the rubber flapper up to see if water goes down easily. If not, quickly make sure the flapper is sealed and use the plunger to clear the clog.
The first plunge should be done gently to expel air from the plunger; then plunge vigorously up and down keeping the plunger under water. If this fails to clear the clog (repeat test procedure) use a closet auger.
Use a closet auger to clear stubborn clogs. Insert the auger into the toilet bowl down into the drain while using a spinning motion. The auger should break though the clog or grasp the obstruction which will allow you to pull the obstruction out when removing the auger. Repeat test procedure.
Hint
Be sure that the protective rubber coating on the auger is positioned at the bottom of the bowl to insure that the bowl is not scratched. Place old towels on the floor around the toilet to soak up any water that splashes out of the toilet.
